Welcome

zen.org.au is a non-profit Zen Buddhist organization based in Melbourne, Australia.

Our founding mission is to offer practical and spiritual support to individuals and the community through socially engaged Zen Buddhist practice:

"Not founded on words or tradition, pointing directly to the mind, and seeing our nature."

As our first and main project, we operate the Melbourne Zen Hospice.

The Melbourne Zen Hospice provides free home support and companionship to persons of any age who are approaching the end of life while continuing to live at home, and to their carers and any family members living with them.

We are small in scale and able to extend personalized and compassionate hospice-at-home support to patients accross inner suburban Melbourne.

We do what we do not as something new or special, but simply to provide everyday practical help and engage openly with those who call on us and whom we visit.

And the Buddha said:

"Even if I were to live on, our coming together would have to end.
All things in the world are impermanent ...
Do not be troubled, for this is the nature of life!"

from the Parinirvana Sutra, the Buddha's final teaching

The Melbourne Zen Hospice is now accepting new patient referrals.

If you are interested in making a referral, please read on about what we offer and whom we can help.

  • We will be introducing a regular online newsletter / 'blog' page shortly. Due to unforeseen busy-ness over recent weeks, the start-up date has had to be moved back by a few weeks. It is now scheduled for late February or March 2008. Please make a point of revisiting our site then.

  • A recently held Palliative Care conference in Edmonton, Canada, reportedly featured a discussion forum on learning not to fear death. Read Carter Haydu's article online at www.buddhistchannel.tv here.
